How to generate Aadhaar Virtual ID(VID)

Recently UIDAI has introduced Virtual ID to address privacy concerns.In this article,we are going to look at what is Virtual ID and how to generate new ID.

Virtual ID (VID) is a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped with your Aadhaar number. VID can be used in lieu of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or e-KYC services are required.Authentication may be performed using VID in a manner similar to using Aadhaar number. Also note it is not possible to derive Aadhaar number from VID.

At this time there is no expiry period defined for VID. VID will be valid till the time a new VID is generated by the Aadhaar number holder.

Following is step-by-step process on how to generate your Virtual ID :

VID can be generated only by the Aadhaar number holder. Also note at any given time only one VID will be valid for an Aadhaar number. UIDAI provides various options to Aadhaar number holders to generate their VID, retrieve their VID in case if you forget, and replace the VID with a new number.

Step #1.Go to UIDAI home and locate VID generator under Aadhaar Services section.

Step #2.On Generate/Retrieve VID page, enter your Aadhaar Number,security code and click on ‘Send OTP’.You will receive the OTP on your UIDAI registered mobile number.

Step #3.Choose ‘Generate VID‘ to generate new virtual ID,On click of Submit button you would be receiving Virtual ID on your registered mobile number.For retrieval (in case you’ve forgotten),choose ‘Retrieve‘ option to get your Virtual ID.

To improve safety, you can also lock your bio metrics in the Aadhaar database, which disables biometric-based authentications.
